Lyons’ Lullabies

The premiere of Lyons’ Lullabies for the wonderful young vocal ensemble Lyons Mouth will be on Nov 21st at Biddenham International School in Bedford as part of a day themed around lullabies (including the Bedford Sings Youth Choir and Tibbs Dementia’s Music for Memory.

The piece uses the lullabies that were sung to each singer when they were babies and focuses on my own feelings about a paradoxical lullaby sung to me.

Mary’s Vision

I am writing 8 organ pieces for women organists on the theme of Mary Magdalen’s final vision (Chapter 42 from her Gospel of the Beloved Companion). So far I have sorted the approach, the thematic/programatic elements and have completed the first and third. A blank page never gets less daunting … yet also full of possibilities.

it’s a lovely and deeply considered setting. Loved the way it had this almost desperate sense of prayer banging on the door, then banging again, and again, possibly without any anticipation of an answer. Sheer bloody minded determination not to give up. An important message beautifully realised.
